Outgoing TD for Dublin South Central, Bríd Smith and Ailbhe Smyth attended the launch with other People Before Profit women candidates.
Councillor Hazel De Nortúin said “Despite the gains made over the last century, we still live in a deeply sexist society where women continue to face sexual harassment, abuse, violence and dismissal. So, in response, today we launch our Charter for Women and Gender Equality.
In the areas of Childcare, Reproductive Health Care, Working Conditions and Pay, and Sexism and Gender Based Violence, this charter sets out what People Before Profit would do to build a more inclusive, progressive, and supportive society to improve the lives of women, trans and non-binary people. Nothing less will be sufficient to create the society we need.
I want to highlight, in particular, the fact that nine counties still have no safe refuge. This is emblematic of how 100 years of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have failed women. In our charter we call for emergency funding for safe refuge and other services and for a tripling of funding to provide a safe refuge in every county and for at least 472 places.
This Charter for Women and Gender Equality is a call to arms, to fight inside and outside the Dáil, for an equal and safe society. If I am elected to succeed Bríd Smith to represent Dublin South Central I will settle for nothing less.
