People Before Profit calls on all Trade Unions to support pickets following granting of injunction
People Before Profit have said that the decision to grant an injunction against the former Debenhams workers who have been staging pickets in an official dispute with the company over receiving a fair redundancy is an outrageous decision and an attack on the right to strike.
The party called on the Trade Union movement to mobilise to support the striking workers who have been calling for the company to honour an agreement to pay 2 weeks plus 2 weeks per year of service as redundancy.
Bríd Smith TD said: “This is an outrageous judgement that attacks the right to strike. The former Debenhams workers are picketing, and have been for over six months, in order to attain an agreed redundancy package.
“For the state to effectively side with the company which is still trading online in this country is a disgrace.
“We are calling on the Trade Union movement to mobilise and support the former Debenhams workers on the pickets in order to achieve the two plus two redundancy that they deserve.”
The TD was also critical of the role of the liquidators KPMG who she accused of using bully boy tactics against the mostly female workforce. She repeated her call for Minister Varadkar to directly intervene in the dispute and to quickly legislate in line with the Duffy/Cahill report into the Clerys dispute.
