People Before Profit Councillor Hazel De Nortúin calls for TDs to support a People Before Profit-Solidarity Dáil motion calling for a 10-point action plan to tackle gender based violence. The motion will be debated by TDs in the Dáil this morning and voted on this evening.
Councillor Hazel De Nortúin said “We have an epidemic of gender-based violence. 52 per cent of women have experienced sexual violence in childhood or adulthood. Seven women have been killed already in 2025 and there were 1,600 reports of domestic violence over Christmas week. We need urgent action to respond to this.
At 10am this morning, Ruth Coppinger TD of People Before Profit-Solidarity will introduce a motion in the Dáil that will call for a 10-point program to tackle gender-based violence. The motion will include calls for the outlawing of character references in cases of gender-based violence cases and for defence legal teams to be prevented from having access to survivors’ counselling notes. The motion also calls for the introduction of a domestic violence register to make information available to anyone feeling at risk from their partner so they can find out if their partner has a conviction for domestic violence.
Just before 10am I will be joining a large group of survivors of domestic, sexual gender-based violence to go into the Dáil gallery to listen to the debate.
Following the debate, the People Before Profit-Solidarity motion will be voted on in the Dáil this evening and I urge people to contact local TDs today to call on them to vote in favour of this important motion.
In addition, I also want to express my support for the call made by gender-based violence survivors for protests and marches for justice for survivors on International Women’s Day 8th March”.
