People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll says the British governments budget will further inflict pain and misery on working people. He stated: "By refusing to properly tax the super wealthy, the British government has once again bowed to the rich. Labour clearly remain wedded to their self-imposed fiscal rules, which always seem to entail the punishment of working class communities."
"Freezing current income tax thresholds will have a disproportionate impact on low and middle income families. Millions more low-paid workers will start paying tax at a lower rate. Raising revenue off the backs of struggling workers is unconscionable, while the wealth of the richest in our society rests largely untouched."
"The abolition of the cruel two-child limit is a welcome and long overdue move. Almost 50,000 families in the North will benefit, and children will no longer be punished for being born into a larger family."
"Labour can and should go much further. A windfall tax on the banks, equalising capital gains and income tax and taxing the assets of the super rich could transform our broken public services, and raise living standards for millions who are living in poverty."
"Tinkering around the edges of reform can never undo the damage caused by more than a decade of austerity. Labour's obvious unwillingness to break free from the shackles of free-market economics, get a grip on tackling wealth inequality and properly invest in health, housing and education for the benefit of all shows that their time is long past. The growing desire for a radical left alternative must be capitalised upon as soon as possible, to take the fight to both Starmer and Farage."
