Overdue Programme for Government Shows Executive Out Of Touch

'MLAs to get a massive pay hike.'; 'If building goals met tens of thousands will still be homeless.'; 'Not a plan for action, just marking time' says MLA Gerry Carroll.

Overdue Programme for Government Shows Executive Out Of Touch

Speaking after the publication of the final Programme for Government, MLA Gerry Carroll described the document as 'simultaneously aspirational and vague, lacking in both detail and urgency'.

He says 'The Executive is trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes by adding a few targets and objectives, without explaining how these goals will actually be met in practice. At the same time, Executive parties are moving with uncharacteristic urgency to establish a Board that looks set to give MLAs a massive pay hike. This shows that the Executive is capable of acting with efficiency and efficacy - but not when it comes to improving the lives of ordinary people.'

This Programme for Government shows why we need a People’s Housing Bill. If the goal of building 5,850 social homes by 2027 is somehow actually met, tens of thousands of homeless families will still be without a home. Increasing numbers of people will be sleeping rough and sofa surfing, until this Executive finally implements a no-fault eviction ban and introduces rent control.

Carroll said he knows '£135 million per year invested to reduce health waiting lists would be welcomed' - but equally noted 'there's no money being allocated in the budget. This isn’t a plan for action.' This is simply marking time.

'The people of the North have waited over a year for meaningful action from this Executive, to put public services on a safe and sustainable footing, tackle homelessness and deliver climate action. This Programme for Government inspires no confidence that the Executive has the will or ability to deliver this change.'
