People Before Profit Galway welcome the news that An Bord Pleanála has quashed the planning permission for the N6 Galway Bypass, on the basis that ABP did not take the Climate Action Plan into account when considering the application for the development.
People Before Profit Galway representative Adrian Curran said:
“Now is the time for Galway City planners to do something different. More roads has never meant less traffic, in Galway or anywhere. Rather than revisiting the plans for the new road, the government and City and County Councils should instead urgently invest in expanding our public transport system to make it free, green and frequent, as well as funding walking and cycling infrastructure, to facilitate active travel.
“Removing the need for people to drive is key. These steps will all aid in reducing traffic in the city, giving people time back in their lives, reducing air pollution, and helping to address climate change. The finances earmarked for this project should be invested as such. There is an opportunity to create a better Galway – one free from congestion, one which prioritises pedestrians, cyclists, people with disabilities.”
