“This Thursday Derry and Strabane Council will discuss a motion calling for the decriminalisation of abortion in the North. People Before Profit and other pro-choice supporters have been leading the campaign for this as a step towards winning the right to choose in the North. We encourage people to contact their local Councillors to support women’s equality and to vote to decriminalise abortion.
People power made the difference in the effort to win the repeal of the eighth amendment in the South. Women will now gain the right to choose. The momentum has carried forward to the North.
This was not a ‘quiet revolution’ as Leo Varadkar and others have suggested. Ireland didn’t simply change. Women in the South have been campaigning for decades for the right to choose. So strong was the people power movement that anti-choice parties like Fine Gael, Sinn Fein and others shifted to support repeal and adopt pro-choice policies.
All pro-choice campaigners celebrate this shift. It shows the impact people power movements have on society and the entire political establishment.
Women across Ireland, North and South, are united in their demand for the right to control their own bodies. Here in the North, the right to choose is an issue that brings people from different communities together across the divide. That’s what people power movements do.
Pro-choice campaigners will rally at the Guildhall at 3.30pm before the Council meeting.”
